Peace Memorial Garden, Xiao En Memorial Park, Nilai

The Malayan Heroes In The Resistant Movement Against Japanese Invasion Monument

In 1941-1945
Celebrating of Remembrance Day
This Monument is the centerpiece of the Peace Memorial Gardens. It pays homage to the people from many different countries that rose to combat the Japanese occupation. The war was the front line of World War Two and also marked the first modern jungle war. This was the first time that the Asian, working together with the westerner, including the former Colonial army and even some foreign anti Japanese fought for the justice, peace and freedom of the world. The resistance and guerrilla warfare consisted of a diverse array of cultural groups, both Malaysians and foreigners.

The monument is dedicated to all groups and individuals that resisted and fought the Japanese army. The monument is comprised of a center obelisk, rising from a reflective pool of water and encircled by hard pavement for gathering and contemplation. The footprint of the obelisk is borrowed from a peace mandala, and is extruded upwards into the form of a traditional four sided obelisk. The base of the obelisk will be made of black granite panels and have dedication inscriptions in different languages on each of faces. The upper portion of the obelisk is comprised of small panels of differing shades and textures of grey granite, that are revealed only when close up to symbolize the many different individuals that came together to form a strong resistance that fought for peace and justice.

A series of granite blocks are located on the outside circumference of this paved area on the lakeside. These blocks will have set into them bronze plaques that describe the historical events of the jungle warfare and illustrate the struggles and sacrifices of the Internationalists and the value and importance of peace and justice, and the extremes of existence they endured to ensure these.

What is "Gold-Picking" ?

-->
“Gold-Picking” is a process that places emphasis on the importance of commemorating the ancestors. It is only when we cherish the memories of our ancestors and simultaneously setting an example in humanity that will instill a stronger sense of awareness for filial piety, morality, love for one’s family and family commitment amongst the future generations.

Traditional Urn

The customary practice of  “Exhumation and Relocation” or traditionally called either “ Gold-Picking” or “Bone-Collecting” ceremonial rites is not only an act of filial piety but also an opportunity to allow the living to commemorate their dearly departed loved ones and to fulfill once again the great deed of filial piousness.

Marble Urn

Sometime, regrets may rise from the failure of dedicating a good resting place to the dearly departed loved ones due to a variety of environmental and other constraints. In such an event, “Exhumation and Relocation” is always a discerning choice for the family. The process of its arrangement provides sufficient time for the family to select the auspicious timing and choice location as well as meticulous arrangement that compensate for the past regrets.

Exhumation

For many, ancestors have been resting in different locations following the migration of the generations. In order to ease the accessibility and convenience of family members gathering during annual Qing Ming, finding a strategic or choice location to consolidate all the ancestors’ tombs is vital. Having ancestors’ tombs in a serene and conducive gathering place for future generations to perpetuate filial piety and cultural identity.
